Archaeology: Bush says
In a speech before the U.S. Airborne 10,232 Division stationed at Fort Bliss, near El Paso, Texas, President Bush reiterated his Vietnamization policy. “A lot of you are consumers– of soda,” said George Bush, to the troops. “A lot soda consumers are too young to remember this but there used to be a commercial about a cola.” said Bush. “They used to say in the commerical: Take the Pepsi Challenge. Well. America is asking you– soldiers– to take the “Vietnam Challenge.” The president is offering the Vietnam challenge as part of a stump talk to energize tired soldiers and relate to some of the youngsters that make up Americas army. According to Mr. Bush, “the Vietnam years were really good years for America. America met the challenge of Vietnam is a nation today and America is a nation today. It is a strong nation today a leader of nations because it did meet the challenge.” Bush at times seeme frustrated by the lack of comprehension of his message among some of the soldiers so he repeated himslef a lot to make sure everyone understood beyond all ambiguity: “We will continue the Vietnam challenge in Iraq. Today. Because this is another war. It is another challenge. It is a war. And the fight will not be easy,” Bush clarified. Many of the assembled soldiers were impressed with the president. They threw hats in the air and there was broad cheering. But some could notfind their hats afterward. And according to at least one outspoken soldier, Staff Sargent Keith Brooks, who heads up a division at Fort Bliss, the speech at least in part missed the mark. “Off the record,” he said, the president cant possibly know this but mostly I see them drinking Coke, or maybe Dr. Pepper. So his actual speech may not actually apply to many of the soldiers going into the worst parts over there.”
