Ecology: The Fish Human Link

humans are like more like fish than previously thought according to a new report from SHFS, the humans science foundation for linking fish to sapiens. The notable similarity? “Like fish we measure the worth of our lives by what happened in the last five minutes,” according to Joseph Abner, who chairs the society. Abner refers here to the so-called “goldfish consciousness” popularized by popularizers. A fish in a goldfish bowl apparently doesnt realize that it is swimming in an endless circle. It believes that it is swimming in a vast ocean. Goldfish memory is believed to be just over 0.5 seconds. The hollywood movie Momento, by depicting a disturbed man unable to remember what happened to him more than five minutes ago, “introduced the movie going public to a similar idea,” according to Abner, “but did significant harm to the publics understanding of its fishlike consciousness” according to Abner. Abner is concerned that moviegoers left the film with the impression that this state is a minority state, when in fact it is the rule. Of course the man in the movie was forced to start over literally, whereas the fish-human consciousness link is meant more metaphorically, as a metaphor of the value or so-called meaning of the individual human existance.
